The Era of Gods - Chapter 40
For this reason, although No.5 Middle School was ranked fifth in Dongning City, their actual strength was roughly second in Dongning City, second only to the No. 1 Middle School that was placed directly under the city’s management.
At this moment, Vice principal Xu Yundong continued, “The rewards for the top ten will be automatically issued. You have three minutes to choose the 5-star card you want. As for the quota for the Super Freshman Summer Camp, it is now with the Old Principal. The selected student will receive the official invitation card from the Super Freshman Summer Camp after the final examination.”
As soon as the voice fell, a screen popped up in front of Lin Xiao’s eyes which displayed, “Congratulations, Lin Xiao. You have won third place in this bonus Endless mode challenge. You can choose any 5-star Uncommon Card or any two Common 5-star cards. Please select the type you desire.”
“I didn’t know that cards can be obtained in this way…” he said immediately. “I want two…”
“Vice Principal, I have a question.”
Lin Xiao looked up in surprise and saw that Yan Renjie wasn’t looking at the rewards at all. Instead, he was looking at the Vice Principal.
Xu Yundong looked at the class teachers from left and right, and at last, stopped for a moment on Zheng Yifan, the class teacher of Second Class. He turned around and said, “What is it that you wish to ask?”
“Mr. Vice Principle, I wonder if you know who won the quota.”
Lin Xiao raised his head in surprise and his eyebrows quivered just like vice principal Xu Yundong. The vice principal shook his head and said, “You’ll know after the finals ended.”
“Can’t you tell us right now?”
The vice principal snorted and said amusedly, “The quota is with the Old Principal, and besides, he hasn’t seen fit to tell me, so how could I tell you? It would be a better use of your time to think about how you can ace the next assessment to perhaps increase your chances of winning that quota, instead of asking questions of me.”
Towards the end, his tone grew harsh. It was evident that Yan Renjie’s untimely inquiry made the vice principal a little upset.
Lin Xiao saw Yan Renjie dejectedly shrug his shoulders as he stepped down. The was no need to ask about this kind of thing. No matter what the school did, they would have to follow. It was probably his usual arrogance and wilfulness that gave him the courage to even question the vice principal. This was also a preferential treatment for constantly getting good grades. Should it be an ordinary student… they probably wouldn’t even get an answer.
Lin Xiao didn’t place much importance on the quota of this so-called Super Freshman Summer Camp, nor did he have what it took to actually do so. After all, he was in third place. Normally speaking, he didn’t stand a chance, so instead of thinking about these, he would be better off thinking about how he could perform in the next assessment and, after getting good grades, go home and ask for goodies from his parents after the finals.
Or wait for the holidays after the final exam to go to the outer realm where his parents were to have some fun and see if he could get some goodies.
After returning to his senses, he lowered his head.
“Two cards…”
Lin Xiao hesitated for a moment. Basically, he couldn’t choose any good cards.
For example, the Profession Cards which he needed would need to be at least of the Legendary grade. Divine Realm Cards were available, but the area granted by common 5-Star Divine Realm Cards was too small. It felt pretty useless.
There was no shortage of resources in his Divine Realm for the time being, or, in another sense, resources that were useful to him now weren’t available from Common cards.
Aside from those, there were Weapon Cards, Racial Cards, Ability Cards…
“Mmn, Ability Cards… these could be useful.”
Lin Xiao always felt that having only one ability for his Spawn was too little. The burst damage of Salted Fish Spike was pretty high, but the cooldown was too long, and it could only be used as an ultimate attack. The Naga would need a common skill.
But when searching for abilities, he fell into a dilemma, not because they were too few abilities, but too many of them.
The school had an exclusive way of acquiring Ability Cards. He dared not assume that the school had every ability, but there certainly were quite a few types. Just the 5-Star Ability Cards alone were in the hundreds, and from among them, he would have to pick a suitable one for the Naga. He looked at the time. Yan Renjie talking to the vice principal wasted a little of his time, and now, he had only slightly more than a minute left.
After some thought, he first excluded magic and long-ranged abilities. In an instant, the number was reduced by half.
Then, he excluded the melee abilities which had a cooldown of more than a minute, and the number was yet again reduced by half.
With less than one hundred remaining, he quickly scanned them, ten lines at a glance, and marked the ones that he felt were okay based on his impression. Excluding the ones that were unusable, he ended up with a list of 13 skills. Then, he was surprised to find out that five of them had functions that overlapped with Salted Fish Spike, PASS.
Of the remaining seven, there were four active abilities and three passive abilities.
The four active abilities were:
Stacking Cleave LV1—— Every time a target is killed, excess attack power will be accumulated and be added onto the next attack.
Chain Strike LV1—— Attacks the same target twice. Expends a small amount of Stamina. 3 seconds cooldown.
Accelerate LV1—— Increases Movement Speed by 20%, continuously consumes Stamina. 1-minute cooldown.
Heavy Strike LV1—— Delivers a heavy attack after a 1-second channel, causing twice the damage. Depending on the weapon and attack method, there is a chance to inflict additional effects.
Three passive Abilities:
One-Handed Sword Specialization LV1—— Improves skill with one-handed swords.
Polearm Specialization LV1—— Improves skill with polearms.
Basic Footwork LV1—— Improves techniques related to footwork during combat.
These were all 5-Star cards. The biggest difference they had from the 2-Star Salted Fish Spike card was that these abilities could be upgraded, while Salted Fish Spike could not. That was the reason why the ability was pretty powerful but very low in stars.
At present, the Black-scaled Naga had no foundation, so only these few abilities were available to them. Lin Xiao glanced at them and quickly selected two cards, namely, Stacking Cleave and Basic Footwork.
The reason for choosing Stacking Cleave was to combo it with Salted Fish Spike. With Salted Fish Spike’s fivefold burst damage, it could easily nuke an enemy. In many cases, there would be extra damage overflow. If they had the Stacking Cleave ability, the excess damage would be added to the next attack, and that would be awesome. If the enemy wasn’t too powerful, it would be possible to strike down an additional enemy after performing the charge attack. Pretty neat.
As for the Basic Footwork, the Naga could dodge attacks more effectively in close combat.
In fact, if possible, he wanted to collect polearms to specialize in this skill, as well as Acceleration, Chain Strike, Heavy Strike, and so on.
Alright, he actually wanted all of them, but, right now, he could only choose two, or, in other words, he had to think of some other way to collect the set of cards in the future.
Now, Lin Xiao already had a very good idea in mind, and that was to find all the basic abilities and merge them into a super rare all-weapon card.
By collecting all the basic abilities of weapons like the one-handed sword, two-handed sword, one-handed hammer, two-handed-mace, one-handed axe, two-handed axe, dagger, polearm, fist weapon, and so on, he would merge them into an All-weapon Basic Ability Card. Think about it, and one would know how powerful it would be.
He would put the two cards away to use them later.
At the end of the three-minute timer, the ten winners were done selecting. The vice principal didn’t announce the ranking like Lin Xiao was expecting. Only the winners themselves knew their own ranking. Lin Xiao knew that he was ranked third, but he didn’t know who between Yan Renjie or Wan Ying had won the first place.
The Endless mode was scored based on the number of enemies killed, not who had persisted the longest. Otherwise, no one would have to fight. All they would have to do was stall for time.
Therefore, although Lin Xiao was the third to last to return, he wouldn’t necessarily be ranked third.
Of course, his suspicions were pretty strong.
For Lin Xiao, this was a good thing that would save him trouble.
