- Chapter 111 - You’re the Most Obedient
“Mr. Ji, Mr. Qiu said he wants to see you.”
This sentence constantly echoed in Ji Naitang’s mind. This was something that Nurse Li, who worked at the mental hospital, told him. Qiu Nanshu had muttered “TangTang” and such over the years, but he had never directly said that he wanted to see him.
This made Ji Naitang’s heart race uncontrollably along the way. His little uncle’s condition hadn’t been very good. Ji Naitang hoped that his little uncle could restore his consciousness, but this hadn’t happened year after year.
Now his little uncle said this. Could this be considered a good start?
“Mr. Ji.”
“How’s my little uncle now?”
Ji Naitang asked about Qiu Nanshu as soon as he entered the lobby on the first floor. Nurse Li took him upstairs and said, “Mr. Qiu’s condition is more stable these past few days than before. He can occasionally recognize me.”
“That’s good.”
The last time he came, Qiu Nanshu was hiding behind the curtains, but he was sitting properly on a chair next to the bed this time. Ji Naitang lightened his steps and walked over. He crouched down by the chair.
“What are you looking at?”
“I’m choosing which story to tell tonight.” Qiu Nanshu flipped through the book in his hands and then turned to look at Ji Naitang. He reached out and touched his head. “TangTang, what do you want to hear?”
“I like it as long as you’re read it.”
“You’re the most obedient one. Little Yu is picky about which bedtime stories he hears. After hearing it once, he usually doesn’t want to hear it a second time.”
Ji Naitang held Qiu Nanshu’s hand and whispered, “You’re wrong, little uncle. Brother was never picky about that.”
“He just doesn’t say it. I can tell that he has a good memory, so he remembers the stories after I read them just once. So, he actually doesn’t want to hear them another time if I read them again. But he’s well-behaved and sensible, so he would listen carefully even if he’s unhappy.”
Ji Naitang’s thoughts drifted back to his childhood. Qiu Nanshu smiled and continued, “It’s not that you’re not picky either. It’s just that you can’t focus. If I tell you the same story ten times, you might listen only once to a little bit of the plot. So, you don’t notice it even if I read the same story multiple times.”
“Little uncle, you have to get better soon.”
His brother wasn’t here anymore. He didn’t want his little uncle to be muddled like this. There was only his little uncle left among his relatives whom he cared about.
It was unknown whether Qiu Nanshu understood what Ji Naitang said. He slowly read a fairy tale out loud. Ji Naitang listened seriously and stayed with him all morning. Before he left, Qiu Nanshu said, “TangTang, bring Little Yu with you when you come next time. I miss him.”
“Okay.”
Ji Moyu’s death was a knot in Qiu Nanshu’s heart. Ji Naitang didn’t know how long it would take for him to untie this knot. Ji Naitang was powerless about this.
He wanted Qiu Nanshu to understand that Ji Moyu was dead and it wasn’t Qiu Nanshu’s fault. But he was afraid that saying this would excite Qiu Nanshu.
In a nearby black car, Tan Huanya looked down at a picture. She muttered to herself, “So this is where Ji Naitang’s little uncle lives. Who’s this woman?”
“She’s the nurse responsible for taking care of Qiu Nanshu.”
Tan Huanya looked quietly for a while and smiled. “Start with this nurse. We’ll do something else if it doesn’t work.”
